Congratulations to Grantham Scholar Eleanor O’Doherty! She has won an award at the Imagine Chemistry 2019 Nouryon challenge.
Eleanor took part in the competition in a three-day event at the company’s RD&I centre in Deventer, the Netherlands.
The premise of the competition was to allow start-ups and research groups to collaborate with Nouryon in working together to scale up their idea.
Eleanor submitted ‘Sustainable Routes To Modern Surfactants: Providing an alternative oil source’ based upon her PhD topic of BSFL fat.
The idea won an award for collaborative research from 160 global applications. Eleanor has successfully made bio-based surfactants (soaps) in her PhD project and with Nouryon’s help will make a lot more.
Eleanor’s research at the Grantham Centre is on to develop heterogonous catalytic routes to synthesising organic products. She employs black solider fly larvae to provide biomass as a chemical feedstock.
