Design of an Algae-bacteria Scrubber for Combustion Gases

Grantham Scholar Zongting Cai works with algae and bacteria with metabolic capabilities for the biodegradation of (VOCs) in industrial waste streams.

Project

My project looks at isolating algae and bacteria strains with novel metabolic capabilities for the biodegradation of specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial waste streams. For this purpose, I am particularly interested in the bottom-up constructions of algae-bacteria consortia with a better understanding of their inner biochemical interactions based on ecological principles and system theories.

Outreach

Researchers engineer synthetic microbial communities to clean up industrial waste streams. Zongting Cai interviewed about his research by the Microbiology Society.

Free sustainability webinars. Zongting was part of a group who organised the Water For Everyone webinar. Created as part of our ongoing public engagement, it is on of a playlist of Grantham Scholar webinars available on YouTube.

Research groups

Zongting Cai is part of the Algal Biotechnology Sheffield Network.
